Libraries as Repositories and Popularizers of Cultural Memory and Heritage: Practices of Creating Memorial Libraries of Scientists

Abstract

In modern society, where the preservation of scientific and cultural heritage and its unbiased presentation to the general public are important, the topic of memorial libraries is of considerable relevance. In the creation and organization of the use of the scientist memorial libraries, there are two important roles of libraries in society intersect – the preservation of cultural memory and the popularization of cultural and scientific heritage. The purpose of the article is to summarize the results of research related to scientist memorial libraries’ creation and use; to show their importance for the popularization of science. The features of the functioning of memorial collections in the library and information sphere, including the context of their digitalization, are shown as well as their differences and similarities with museum activities. The authors described the mechanism by which memorial libraries contribute to public involvement in the discourse of scientific culture. It helps us to preserve the cultural memory of outstanding scientists and their contributions to science, strengthening the link between science and society; to form a deeper understanding of scientific achievements and their significance for the modern world. The study concluded that work with memorial libraries is an important element in the popularization of science through the dissemination of knowledge about outstanding scientists, which strengthens the role of libraries as mediators of scientific culture. The scientific novelty of the work lies in understanding the importance of memorial libraries of scientists for the popularization of science. The practical significance is in substantiating the memorial activities of libraries as an effective way to develop effective forms of work to popularize science.
