Abstract

We suggest remembering Alexander Leonidovich Posadskov (1950-2024), a mentor, book historian, bibliophile, and organizer of science, whose more than half a century of scientific activity was "long-term and fruitful interdependence" with the State Public Scientific and Technical Library of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (GPNPTB SB RAS), dedicating a special issue of the journal to his professional interests. "The book. Reading. The media environment." The scale of his contribution to book studies is still quite difficult to assess. This will require years of studying the scientist's legacy: his scientific papers, archival materials, diaries, and documents donated by the State Scientific Library of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Abstract

This publication examines one of the challenges of the post-revolutionary era, associated with Russia's exit from the Civil War and the transition to “civil peace”, which required its participants to adapt to the new reality. This challenge was particularly acute for formerly active figures in the anti-Bolshevik movement, who were repressed but later amnestied by the Bolshevik regime. The high demand for intellectual labor in the newly established state economic planning bodies allowed several of its representatives (Professor N. Ya. Novombergsky, General V. G. Boldyrev, and others) to occupy key positions in the creation and functioning of the Siberian (Regional) Plan in the 1920s. Based on information from personal files and departmental records, a reconstruction of several basic structures of the everyday life of representatives of this category (wages, living conditions, health status, etc.) has been carried out. It is concluded that the adaptation processes were characterized by a positive resocialization of the “former” workers, and their basic life support parameters converged with those of the regional mid-level nomenklatura. The social and professional aspects of their adaptation were interrelated, ensuring the high and sustainable effectiveness of their intellectual work, which had been interrupted by the Bolshevik regime's resumption of large-scale discriminatory and repressive policies against its former political opponents after 1928. Thus, the period of restoration and dynamic growth of the country's and the region's intellectual potential in the 1920s gave way to a policy of extermination of some of its bearers in the following decade.

Abstract

This study focuses on the diary entries of V. N. Pepelyayev (1884–1920), a member of the Central Committee of the People's Freedom Party and later the Head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in the anti- Bolshevik Russian government. The increased attention to the diary is due to V. N. Pepelyayev’s prominent position in the hierarchy of the counterrevolution power during the Civil War in Russia. The vivid ideological coloring of the events, the straightforwardness and sharpness of V. N. Pepelyayev's statements, as well as the fact that the diary ended up in the hands of political enemies shortly after the author's execution, contributed to the speculative use of the text. The objective of this article is to address the adequacy of the reception of Pepeliaev's diary entries in historiography of the 1920s–2010s. The author studied the archival collections of the State Archives of the Russian Federation and the State Archives of the Novosibirsk Region; five versions of the diary's publication, and works of researchers, in which the ego-document is presented as the primary source of information. It allowed him to conclude that V. N. Pepelyayev 's diary entries have been incompletely used in historiography; a revision of the text based on the handwritten original is still relevant as well as a comprehensive analysis of the diary’s contents.

Abstract

In the 1920s and 1930s, Siberia experienced major transformations caused by revolutions, the Civil War, and then large-scale collectivization and industrialization. These events radically altered the sociocultural landscape of the region. The foundations of book publishing shifted, a unified publishing system began to emerge, and the thematic focus of books changed. The publication of ego-documents also played a significant role in the region's publishing process. During the abovementioned years, those texts became instruments for shaping collective consciousness in the context of the policies of the new state. The purpose of this article is to examine the thematic composition of ego-documents published as separate editions in Siberia in the 1920s -30s. The article focuses on two major trends in the publication of ego-documents in Siberia related to the need for ideological and economic strengthening of the new state. The first one was determined by the activities of the Historical Party Commission (Istpart) and its regional branches, which collected and published memoirs of the revolutionary movement and the Civil War. In Siberia, the leading role in publishing was played by Siberian Historical Party Commission, based in Novosibirsk, but employees of Tomsk, Irkutsk and Buryat and other Istpart's branches also contributed significantly to the collection and preservation of materials for subsequent publication. The second publication trend of the period under review was linked to economic changes and the need to increase the pace and efficiency of industrial production and agriculture. Under these conditions, numerous brochures featuring autobiographical essays by leading industrialists, sharing their experiences, became widespread. These texts served a dual purpose: they served as a powerful propaganda tool and had practical application for a wide range of participants in the production process.

Abstract

The article examines the current state and development trends of the book industry in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) from 2017 to 2025. The relevance of the work is determined by the need to overcome the "statistical blindness" regarding regional book publishing, the data on which in all-Russian summaries is often significantly underestimated, and by the importance of studying the unique adaptive models emerging in the national subjects of the Russian Federation under the influence of digital transformation and market centralization. The aim of the study is to identify the structural characteristics and key trends of Yakutia's publishing complex through the prism of its adaptation to all-Russian challenges and the fulfillment of a specific cultural mission. Based on a comprehensive analysis of state statistics on the republic's press and materials from the leading publishing holding company, the Joint-Stock Company National Publishing Company Ayar named after S. A. Novgorodov (hereinafter referred to as JSC NIC Ayar), a specific regional model that had emerged by the mid-2020s was identified and characterized. The model is defined by high market concentration around a single system-forming publishing house, the dominance of national-language content, and the simultaneous development of digitalization and product diversification strategies. It has been established that the sustainability of this model is based on deep niche specialization, which allows it to adapt to the challenges of the periphery, but gives rise to systemic contradictions between the mission of preserving cultural heritage and the requirements of economic efficiency. The practical significance of the work lies in providing an objective analytical basis for the formation of regional cultural and economic policy in the field of book publishing, as well as in the possibility of using the identified Yakut model for comparative analysis with other national regions of Russia.

Abstract

The article is devoted to the history of bibliographic study of memoir literature in Russia, the established scientific and methodological traditions of preparing bibliographic indexes of diaries and memoirs, as well as the prospects for the development of reference publications of this profile. Bibliography of memoirs in Russia has rich scientific traditions. By now, about 30 volumes of various all-Russian indexes of memoirs and diaries have been published. Despite the abundance of publications, the scientific and methodological principles of their preparation were not the same, and sometimes differed significantly. Currently, two large projects on bibliographic memoirs are ongoing. One of them is devoted to texts on the pre-revolutionary history of Russia, the other one – to memoirs and diaries on its Soviet period. As a result, the problems of exchanging scientific and methodological experience, discussing and coordinating the basic principles of bibliographic work are becoming more relevant than ever. The study examined key issues in the preparation of bibliographic indexes of memoirs: annotation methods, annotation size, author's line form, attitude to illustrative material, determination of the optimal set of scientific auxiliary indexes. The author pointed out the importance of following established traditions of bibliographic study of memoir literature and proposed the innovations related to the repeatability of annotated texts in different accounting periods.

Abstract

Using research methods of historical scholarship, this article examines the circumstances of a unique story surrounding the publication of a book by Novosibirsk historian A. L. Posadskov. The author explores the nuances of the historical era and the specifics of internal departmental practices related to academic publishing. Academic books were formally exempt from censorship. However, even the tight-knit research teams of regional branches of the USSR Academy of Sciences were effectively unable to circumvent the official and unspoken rules generally accepted in academic circles. The story of A. L. Posadskov's Book Publishing in Siberia: 1919–1923 is a striking example of how the question of the permissible limits of publishing freedom arose within the academic community at the regional and national levels on the eve of Perestroika.
